21 things I want to do in 2021

Planning is useful and satisfying for me, and this exercise can be fun. Looking back at the end of the year is cool, too, and I don’t beat myself up about it if I don’t make it all happen. If you’d like to try it, I’d be really interested in what you’d like your 2021 to look like. Either post in comments or send me an e-mail if you’d rather. Maybe we can inspire each other!

  1. Go for a walk, every day. Track time and kilometres either with an app or just on paper. Walking has made a huge positive difference for me, and it’s been especially a great way to stay in touch with friends. Walking with a friend and catching up is my new, safe way to be social. I also like listening to audiobooks and podcasts while I walk.

  2. Get comfortable with not living up to expectations – either my own for myself, or those of others. I can only be my radical leftist self in my head right now. No actions to go to, and I have zero energy to keep up daily reading about the struggle. And that’s okay. Stop feeling inadequate or guilty.

  3. Go on a few road trips and have epic adventures, when that’s possible again. Go east to see my brother, out west to see friends, and discover new places.

  4. Keep writing in my journals, documenting, and photographing. I’m going to do a separate blog post about this, I think. I’ve been keeping journals for years and I want to write about how I do it and why it’s important to me. Maybe others will find that information useful.

  5. Look for, and learn about, ways I can live on my small income, work less, and still live a rich life.

  6. Take care of myself with healthy food, exercise, and focus on non-destructive ways to cope.

  7. Create a cutting flower garden next summer. We’ve usually grown food, but I think we’ll get a CSA share this summer and I’ll grow flowers and herbs in 2021.

  8. Get my Diggers bookshop back up and running in the summer, and add house plants to the shop.

  9. Learn new songs on my ukes (I got a new one that my son made me for xmas!)

  10. Continue my embroidery practice, design more intricate patterns and learn new stitches.

  11. Make one day each week my “watercolour painting day”. Create a collection of watercolour art cards.

  12. Send little surprise packages and notes to friends and family periodically throughout the year.

  13. Continue decluttering, simplifying, and organizing to get my house how I want it. Making my surroundings peaceful and beautiful has really been therapeutic for me during these pandemic times. Ursula LeGuin wrote something that I often go back to about homemaking: “I always wondered why the makers leave housekeeping and cooking out of their tales. Isn’t it what all the great wars and battles are fought for — so that at day’s end a family may eat together in a peaceful house?”

  14. Keep up my morning routine: make the bed (first accomplishment of the day!), coffee, write in my journal, absorb the views of nature outside and no internet for the first hour.

  15. Continue caring for my houseplants, and keep propagating so I can pass along cuttings and plant babies.

  16. Budget to live on less and track spending. Stop buying things unnecessarily and use up what I have before buying anything else. Also along those lines, keep bartering whenever possible.

  17. Continue to create small habits and routines to stay on top of things. I honestly wish I had become more conscious of how these little things – like keeping the house always clean and organized, putting stuff away, cleaning the kitchen before heading to bed, having a place for everything, etc – really relieve my stress level.

  18. Consciously schedule social media and limit time spent there. That is a rabbit hole I don’t want to fall into anymore.

  19. Write more this year, specifically recording past times in my life, events, friendships, and recording family anecdotes and such.

  20. Prep meals, make granola weekly, and cook at least one new recipe a month.

  21. Start a new blog and write upload a new post once a week.
